Behind the Development of YS BLADES

The Issue of Traditional Blades
For a figure skater, quality skates particularily the blades, are essential.
Normally, blades are crafted by welding three separate components by hand. However, welded blades lack the strength to handle intense impacts from triple and quadruple jumps, often bending or breaking under pressure. Many professional skaters have to replace their blades multiple times each month. What is more, even with the skills of experienced craftspeople, there are inconsistencies among each set of blades. Even among the same models from the same manufacturer, there can be a few millimeters of variation in the weld position or a few degrees of angle difference. This means,
skaters must go through a "breaking-in" period each time they replace their blades.
Why should skaters have to adjust to their equipment?
This issue had been plaguing the world of figure skating for decades.
The Turning Point
In February 2013, one Japanese skater visited us for a foot measurement after learning about the high-precision 3D measuring instruments we owned. Delighted and amazed by the technology we had, the skater shared with us about the challenges posed by the blades. After this discussion, the president of Yamaichi, Teranishi, thought that there must be a way we could use our experience and technology to make better quality blades. Teranishi proposed developing blades inhouse, marking the beginning of an groundbreaking journey.
The Developing Process
Our commitment to excellence is exemplified by Ishikawa's bold decision to machine blades directly from solid blocks of steel. This approach transforms a 10 kg (22 lbs) block into a meticulously crafted 270 g (less than 10 oz) blade. By creating a solid, single-unit structure, we have dramatically enhanced the durability necessary to withstand the shocks of explosive triple and quadruple jumps.
Ishikawa’s vision led to the creation of blades featuring a unique arched stanchion, expertly engineered to disperse shocks upon landing. Our signature design is not just aesthetically stunning; it plays a critical role in shock absorption, setting a new standard in performance.
Selecting the optimal material from our extensive inventory of over 50 types of special steel was paramount. If the material is too hard, the blades risk breaking; if too flexible, they may warp. Each type of steel has distinct characteristics that require different machining techniques—much like the difference between carving clay and wood. Our rigorous testing process identified the perfect steel, one that strikes the ideal balance between flexibility and durability. In our flexibility comparison tests, our material demonstrated extraordinary resilience, bending an impressive 99 degrees without breaking, a stark contrast to traditional materials that shattered instantly under pressure. With our blades, which feature unmatched flexibility, strength, and beauty, skaters can significantly reduce physical strain and minimize injury risk.
Through creating numerous prototypes and obtaining feedback from multiple skaters, Ishikawa and Muguruma engaged in a meticulous trial-and-error process. They went to the skating rink to test the blades on the ice in cold conditions. In total, more than 150 sets of prototypes were made. Eight long years of unwavering dedication culminated in the launch of YS BLADES, a product of our relentless commitment to excellence.
This remarkable achievement is a direct result of Yamaichi's deep expertise in materials, advanced metal processing technologies, top-tier equipment, and passion. We redefine what’s possible in the world of skating.
Our Passion
Yamaichi Special Steel Co., Ltd. is a trading company specializing in steel and excelling in processing and heat treating to deliver outstanding finished products. With YS BLADES, weembarked on our first venture to manufacture products for the public.
"I aimed to create unparalleled value that embodies 'Yamaichi's spirit,'" said Ishikawa, a dedicated member of our processing department. While the automotive parts he typically works on aren't immediately visible, YS BLADES are something else entirely. For Ishikawa, this project transcends mere attachment to the product; it's all about addressing athletes' needs effectively. "Creating something remarkable drives me. The true joy lies in knowing my work enhances people’s lives, and this vision was realized through our partnership—Me and Muguruma."
Muguruma, who has embarked on his dream of owning a coffee shop after leaving Yamaichi, takes great pride in YS BLADES' success. "I envision seeing YS BLADES on the podium during major events for many years to come. I hope my work leaves a legacy that endures."
Even after Muguruma's departure, Ishikawa remains steadfast, pouring his heart and soul into YS BLADES, nurturing the aspirations of his friend. His relentless pursuit of craftsmanship continues to set the standard for excellence.
